Mark + Maya: A New England Aquarium Wedding (hint: there’s penguins!)

May 24, 2015

This was my first time photographing an event at the New England Aquarium.  New venues are always exciting, and keep the creativity flowing.  Located on the Boston harbor, both the ceremony and reception were held in the back; the ceremony on the Harbor Terrace, and the reception in a tent.  What about the cocktail hour?  I’m glad you asked!  Well, the cocktail hour took place in the Aquarium, right next to the penguins!  However, I was a little disappointed that the hors d’oeuvres were NOT being served by the penguins.  I mean, they’re even already dressed for the occasion!

The day began a short limo ride away at the Renaissance Waterfront hotel.  Upon arrival and entering the bride’s suite, it was very evident this day could not go wrong for Maya.  Even if things didn’t go as planned, I knew she would take them in stride with a smile on her face.  They trusted me to choose the first look location in the hotel, so I chose this cool red-lit hallway next to the lobby.  I was a little worried about how the color would come out because of the red lights, but in the end it turned out to be a non-issue.

For the bride + groom portraits, we hopped in a limo to the Christopher Columbus Park, a short walk from the Aquarium.  Since it was a gorgeous Boston late spring day on memorial day weekend, the place was packed with tourists!  While the tourists were {mostly} respectful, there were a lot of them taking pictures of Mark + Maya!  I felt like their personal celebrity paparazzi with all the attention they were getting.  We continued onto the Harbor Walk for family formals, which allowed us a bit more privacy, and showcased the harbor as a backdrop.

By the time the ceremony began, the light was gorgeous, the sun had fallen behind the aquarium, and the air was the perfect temperature – the kind of day every couple hopes for on their wedding.  The reception itself was classy yet relaxed, and the atmosphere had a resonating feel of excitement and joy.  The Party Factor (live band) kept the party going right up until the end, where we said goodbye to our couple with a glow-stick exit (sparklers weren’t allowed, so this was the next best thing!).  If all my clients were this organized, easy-going, and friendly, I wouldn’t be upset!  Thanks for including me in your gorgeous day!
