Maria + Eric’s Boston Spring Engagement Session

Maria + Eric are a really awesome couple, and I had been looking forward to this shoot for a long time.  They booked me super early for their wedding (yay!), and were nothing but enthusiastic to work with me.  This is such an awesome feeling when you have clients like this, it just seeps over into our work together.

We started out with a drink first in their neighborhood at the Mass Ave Tavern.  Since we hadn’t met before, I thought this would be a good time to chat before I shove a camera in their face!  A lot of the time alcohol will help loosen everyone up for beginning-of-the-shoot jitters.

It was a little chillier than we had hoped, but we almost had the session a week before, which might have been near disaster, because nothing was blooming the previous weekend.  A few days before the session, everything bloomed all at once, which made for some amazing photos.

They definitely take the cake for my longest engagement session yet – and it was a blast!  We walked all around the Back Bay area of Boston, and at the end of the session headed down to East Boston for some sunset skyline shots.  They were up for anything, and were natural in front of the camera.  Very excited for their wedding this fall.  Hope you enjoy your photos!!

Live Music: The Airborne Toxic Event

In honor of one of my favorite bands, The Airborne Toxic Event, I thought I would do a special post today.  Their new album just came out, and I have some old photos from a show I took back in 2011 that I never got around to sharing.  It took place at The Met in Pawtucket, RI, and is definitely an awesome, intimate venue – the kind of place you want to see your favorite band.

Here’s a look at a past blog post I did from one of their shows back in 2010 on my old blog: http://www.kristenschueler.blogspot.com/2010/09/airborne-toxic-event-up-close-just.html

I think I like those photos better, but the venue was so much different and was able to use a different lens that seemed to render better results.  Live music is so difficult to shoot well, especially as just a participant of the audience.  Either way, enjoy, and check out their new album, Such Hot Blood.  Or don’t.  Really, I get nothing out of it, and the verdict is still out over my thoughts on the album.

(And yes, I agree, they have an unfortunate band name, but put on an amazing show – we’ve seen them at least half a dozen times.)

Confessions from a Photographer: I Hate Having my Photo Taken!

To say I hate to have my photo taken would be an understatement.  All of a sudden, I forget how to stand, think too much about how to naturally let my tongue relax (what?!?), have monkey arms, slouchy shoulders, and can’t seem to keep my eyes from either bugging out or over blinking.  WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME?!?  It’s a strange phenomenon that seems to happen to so many people, and it develops during the infinite moments of when I bring the camera from my side to my face.

And that’s why I think it’s so important to be in front of the camera before your wedding day.  While you may feel like an awkward freak while having your picture taken, once you see the photos you’ll realize all that anxiety was only in your head, and hey, you look AWESOME!  But the main reason I think the engagement session is so important is the time you get to spend with your photographer (hey that’s ME!).  The more comfortable you become with that person, the better your photos will be.  Which is why these photos below came out so awesome – my boyfriend Adam (also my second shooter and assistant) took them.  I am so comfortable with him that I am actually able to relax and be myself.

So please, when you come to get your photo taken, BE NERVOUS.  It’s normal.  Everyone is!  Get it out of the way first, and that’s when the magic happens.

I may even LIKE it when he takes my picture.  It’s like taking a shameless selfie, except someone else is taking it.

Thanks Adam for taking my new headshots, I love them!

New Album: Easthampton Couture Book

I have spent years envisioning this book and it has been months in the making.  Since I first laid eyes on Couture Book, I fell in love.  The only problem with their books is there are so many options, I never knew which one I wanted to offer.  After MUCH deliberating, I decided the first one I wanted to offer was the Easthampton book from the New York line.  It comes with a snazzy slip cover that is the same design as the front + back of the album and the photo finish on the cover is so smooth + soft.

These books are a whole different animal than the other ones I offer.  My standard wedding album is leather or cloth bound, with 15 spreads/30 pages.  Each spread holds as many as 12-15 photos, with one or two full page spreads that hold just one image.  The Couture Book is 115 pages, upwards of 200 photos.  The design is very simplistic, really showcasing the photos. Each page has 1-2 images, some up to 4-6.  The pages are also like thick magazine pages, as opposed to the pages of my standard album, which do not bend; completely stiff cardboard based pages.

Below are some photos of my new sample, from Chloe + Chap’s wedding last August.  You’ll see what I’m talking about with the design and the pages.  It will be offered as an upgrade from my standard album – I can’t wait to share them with everyone!
